Remove the existing caliper brake system. Save the thick curved washers from this assembly for later use. (they are installed against the curved portion of the steering fork in the front and rear of the caliper mounting bolt) Using the bolt and nut in your V-brake kit, and the two thick curved washers from above, install the chrome adapter plate as shown in the picture. Do not tighten the bolt until the hose clamps are installed. Be sure to install one of the thick curved washers between the adapter plate and the fork. This provides a clearance that is necessary for the assembly to tighten down properly. Install the hose clamps through the slots cut in the adapter plate, and tighten. Tighten the clamps and upper bolt (through the fork) alternately until the adapter plate is completely secure. The adapter plate should be securely tightened for safe brake operation! Using the instructions supplied with the Shimano V-Brake kit, install the rest of the brake system. In many cases, the existing brake cable will be too short to work properly with the new V-Brake system. If necessary, use the brake cable provided (pre-cut to proper length) to complete the installation. |
