Flyer SE Test Report (10/12/01) There are a number of changes and improvements found in the new Flyer SE by Currie. The principle difference is the new finned MAC motor, which gives the Flyer SE the performance edge over all previous Currie scooters! This motor, although faster than the Flyer 2001's Hi-Kol motor, does not perform as smoothly during start-up. There is a definite lurch to the initial movement as you depress the throttle. However, once under way, there is a noticeable high-end performance improvement. Top speed of the Flyer SE averages about 1-2 MPH greater than the standard Flyer, yet retains the same hill climbing power. Frame strength has been improved by utilizing "ovalized" steel tubing rather than the standard circular cross section tubing found in earlier models. In addition, threaded inserts in the frame have been employed, rather than through bolting, to retain the aluminum deck to the chassis. This improvement results in both a stronger frame as well as greater ease in removing the deck for access to the battery compartment. The solid aluminum drive plate has been replaced by a heavy stamped steel plate, resulting in some increase in chain noise. However, through the regular application of a wax based chain lube this can easily be quieted. Gear ratios, tires, wheels, brakes, hubs, deck, (with the exception of a new anti-slip material pattern) steering, battery compliment, handlebars, and folding mechanism remain the same as previous Flyers.
